History of Altinkum

About 15 years ago, people from large cities around Turkey such as Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir first came to Altinkum and started to build their own summer houses. When Turkey's economy started to decline some of those people found it very hard to survive in the big cities and many of the summer house owners decided to move into Altinkum. Which caused an uptrend in the local economy and helped towards the growth of Altinkum. The location of today's Didim used to be around the Apollo temple at the ancient Didyma town. They called the area "Yoran", which used to look like a fortress and locals of Yoran later on called it "hisar" meaning "castle". In 1955-1956, there was an earthquake and after the earthquake the government supported locals and built them modern concrete houses down on the south west part of the old civilization later on called "Yenihisar", meaning "yeni: new" + "hisar: castle".
