| ALTINKUM
means golden sands ("altin: gold" + "kum:sand")and
with its beaches, which gently shelve into the inviting turquoise
Aegean sea, you will soon see how the resort got its name.
Altinkum has excellent beach life with water sports or pedalos
for those who prefer the pace of life a bit slower. Sun beds and
umbrellas are available for rent and once settled there will be
no need for you to move until sunset. Altinkum is a friendly
and relaxed resort. You will get to know locals quickly and they
will enjoy nothing better than chatting with you over a glass of
Turkey's famous apple tea.The picture left is of the main
beach in Altinkum, which is lined by restaurants, bars and
shops. The second beach which is to the left, is smaller but just
as well served. The third beach is to the right and smaller still,
but is well catered for by restaurant bars. There is a 5star hotel
here and a new 5star hotel is due to open here for the 2006 season.

History
of Altinkum
About 15 years
ago, people from large cities around Turkey such as Istanbul,
Ankara, and Izmir first came to Altinkum and started to
build their own summer houses. When Turkey's economy started
to decline some of those people found it very hard to survive
in the big cities and many of the summer house owners decided
to move into Altinkum. Which caused an uptrend in the local
economy and helped towards the growth of Altinkum. The location
of today's Didim used to be around the Apollo temple at
the ancient Didyma town. They called the area "Yoran",
which used to look like a fortress and locals of Yoran later on
called it "hisar" meaning "castle". In 1955-1956,
there was an earthquake and after the earthquake the government
supported locals and built them modern concrete houses down on
the south west part of the old civilization later on called "Yenihisar",
meaning "yeni: new" + "hisar: castle".
